**A Day in the Life**


As a Controls Software Engineer working at the Medtronic offices in North Haven, CT you will join a team of engineers working on the development and commercialization of Medtronics next-generation Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) platform.You will focus on the controls software for the Instrumentations robotic subsystem.This involves creating the sophisticated embedded real-time platform and the instrument control software for the operation of the embedded actuator and sensor hardware. In addition, the role will involve supporting the electromechanical design, test, and verification and validation of the core surgical instruments, Stapling adapter and Ligasure prototypes with the corresponding control software.

**You will:**


+ Design and develop feedback control loop algorithms using Simulink/Matlab on an x86 based embedded system for the robots real-time operating system and control platform:

+ Robust controls for instrument manipulators

+ Signal processing such as digital filters, integrators, and controllers

+ Provide startup-self tests and run-time diagnostics

+ Define and review software requirements pertaining to Controls.

+ Liaison with software systems engineering and validation group.

+ Define and execute verification plans. Test software and fix defects.

+ Conducts software and product hardware-in-loop testing and create model and prototypes.

+ Review teammates MATLAB/Simulink models and ensure that all software meets quality standards.Prepare and participate in design reviews.

+ Document or participate in the documentation of the software including architecture and design detail, unit testing, anomaly tracking and reports.

+ Collaborate with peer to manage development of appropriate electromechanical testing to verify algorithms and product meet internal and external customer, system and subsystem requirements.


**Qualifications**


**Must Have: Minimum Requirements:**


Bachelors Degree and 4 years of relevant experience, or Masters degree and 2 years experience.


**Nice to Have:**


_Experience with control design including:_


Familiarity with multi-body kinematics and dynamics


Knowledge and experience in multi-variable and optimal control


Design of position, velocity, and torque feedback controllers


Implementing and tuning of high-performance feedback control in software


Signal processing experience (discrete/digital methods and algorithms)


Proficient use of modeling simulation software (Matlab/Simulink preferred)


Demonstrated skills in managing priorities


Experience working with multiple teams on concurrent, interdependent projects


Experience with real-time software on microprocessor-based systems.


Experience developing in a Linux environment (Ubuntu preferred)


Integrating hardware and software, particularly in an embedded context.


Fluency in English is required (German a plus)


_Experience with relevant technologies including:_


Mechatronics


Working knowledge of design and development of complex electromechanical systems


Mechanical engineering (particularly high-accuracy motor-controlled mechanisms)


Electrical engineering (particularly networked / embedded computing elements)


Sensors and actuators


Previous experience with robotics and multi-DOF kinematic chains


Redundant and safety-critical systems


Force and tactile feedback


Surgical devices/instruments


**Nice to have:**


+ Experience in implementing fast control loops, particularly those involving motors and sensors.

+ Comfortable with common development tools:environments, compilers, build management software, debugging and source control tools, etc.

+ Comfortable debugging hardware/software challenges.

+ Medical product development highly desired-regulator processes, safety considerations, hands-on experience with medical/surgical devices/instruments.

+ Experience with a big company with matrix structures, having already worked with cross functional teams within an international environment.

+ In depth knowledge and application of investigative research and analysis.
