Provide leadership for the development and execution of long-term commodity strategies across Medtronic business units. This position will engage with business unit leadership to ensure delivery of effective procurement strategies and standards that deliver to Medtronic’s overall operations and business results.

Through strategic leadership, the Global Commodities Leader will facilitate Business Unit discussions that will optimize the commodity in terms of quality, cycle/response time, technology, risk, and total cost for our largest categories of spend: Metal Components ($1.2B); Plastic Molded Components ($700M); Electrical Components ($700M) and Packaging($400M). Partnering closely with Medtronic’s supply management business unit organizations, this individual will work to leverage cross BU strategies at the center and continuously work to develop and improve supplier leverage by consolidating the business needs with the broader interests of MDT plc. In addition, this individual will be responsible for leveraging strategic sourcing processes across MDT plc by maximizing the company’s combined purchase power to reduce overall cost of ownership and acquisition through strategic negotiation and optimization of supplier partnerships within the primary categories of oversight which will include: metal components, molded components, electrical components, packaging representing close to $3B in spend.

**A Day in the Life**

The Global Commodity Director will have overall responsibility for leading a cross-functional, cross-divisional commodity team in the development and implementation of strategies and goals for assigned commodities (sometimes referred to as categories), in support of business objectives for cycle/response time, quality assurance, technology/new product development, risk mitigation, and total cost. This individual will own strategies that extend through the full supply chain including primary and sub-tier suppliers.

**Sourcing and Commodity Management /Leadership**

•Responsible for the commodity (category) strategy development and deployment across the 4 categories above.

•Ensuring strategic sourcing events are managed in the category and long term cost down roadmaps are developed in conjunction with the BUs

•Develops common processes with the Center of Excellence to administer pan-MDT approaches consistent across each category.

•Assists category efforts for supplier analysis and selection processes, make/buy, outsourcing, and transitions within the categories overseen.

•Assists in some of the very large negotiation strategies for the commodities/categories under this role. Includes many types of agreements with suppliers including purchasing agreements, development, supply, VMI, indemnification, etc.

•Summarize and communicate market condition and technology trend information regarding commodities and suppliers. Help implement appropriate business strategy changes. Help develop technology roadmaps and corresponding supplier roadmaps where needed within the categories.

**Supply Cost Optimization**

•Responsible for long term supply roadmaps to support overall commodity strategies. Utilizes analytics and defined metrics (e.g. focus matrix and strategic sourcing scorecards) to identify and organize suppliers accordingly, in conjunction with QA, BU’s and Operations teams.

•Working with internal and external resources, responsible for leading commodity rationalization, simplification, and localization.

•Supporting and helping form strategic alliances with preferred suppliers to drive competitive advantage for Medtronic

**Supplier Performance Optimization**

•Ensure the category strategies support the BU requirements of quality and service ensuring the supply base has the capability and capacity to support Medtronic growth

•Work in conjunction with the Center of Excellence team to deploy Supplier Relationship Management programs and other best practices at the suppliers which cross pan MDT and within the global categories.

**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**

•Bachelor’s Degree

•15 years of strategic sourcing, supply chain and commodity management experience in a large, multi-divisional corporation

•Minimum of 8 years commodity management in either plastics, metals, packaging and/or electronics markets bringing expertise from these areas

•Experience in forming and maintaining strategic alliances

•Experience in cross-functional commodity teams

**Nice to Have:**

•Master’s Degree (Technical or Business) and/or Engineering Degree in Materials Science or Electrical

•CPIM Certification

•Knowledge of e-commerce initiatives

•Knowledge of FDA regulated industries

•Knowledge of raw materials

•Proficient in computers

•Excellent written communication skills

•Previous experience in a medical device / life sciences industry
