The Sr RD Engineering Services Manager directs and manages a technical team through the process of providing a multitude of customers across the Santa Rosa site support in the development of novel, new products.


The Sr RD Engineering Services Manager supports Coronary/RDN and Heart Valve Technologies (HVT) Product Development (PD) and Research and Innovation (RI) teams with respect to lab services and testing (fatigue testing, metallography, SEM, design performance, particulate testing), pilot manufacturing (clean rooms, drug formulation, drug spray, machine shop, 3D printing), and prototyping labs across the Coronary and Structural Heart business in Santa Rosa, California.The Sr Manager is also responsible for the equipment development and automation group in support of new product development and research work.

They must ensure that employees were appropriately trained to support all customers.Moreover, they must devise a strategy to optimize Engineering Services across the Santa Rosa site.The team consists of 25 technicians, for engineers, A Senior Engineering Supervisor, and several contingent workers.

This position reports to a Director of RD within the Coronary/RDN business unit and also serves as a member of the local RD leadership team.

Position Responsibilities:

The Sr Manager provides project planning, budgeting, resource management, and technical leadership skills to the team, while also coaching and developing those within the group. In addition, they guides the conceptualization of new strategies and methodologies to improve and optimize services provided by the group in support of new product development and research. They develop and maintains relationships with internal and external customers while promoting a culture of “Customer Focused Quality”. The Sr Manager provides strong technical guidance and leadership as a member of the local RD leadership team.

Directs and supervises the activities of a team of engineers and technicians, ensuring technical rigor is utilized throughout the product development process. Ensures team possesses the appropriate mix and level of skills required to support the development of high quality products in a dynamic growth environment. In addition, responsible for supporting and encouraging continued employee growth and development. The Sr Manager must be able to work collaboratively with cross-functional groups in a matrix organization to help streamline the product development process.

Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) in stakeholder management skills are critical to success within this role.

Sets performance expectations with team and ensures that these expectations are clearly communicated and understood.

Understands customer needs and, along with senior management team, helps define short- and long-term Engineering Services strategy. As a member of the local RD leadership team, the Sr Manager is responsible to execute various department wide strategic initiatives aimed at developing the long-term capabilities of the group. It is expected that this individual will help to integrate customer focus into strategic planning and product development.

Responsible for the motivation, coaching and professional development opportunities to the Engineering Services team that ultimately leads to high performance, challenging assignments and retention. Plan staffing requirements to support current and future business unit development activities.

Interact with leaders across Medtronic CardioVascular and forge and maintain external alliances to produce ideas, opportunities, identify improvements and enhance existing and new processes. Maintain a professional and credible image with consultants, vendors and co-workers. Interact with other members of organization to help to ensure development projects meet current and future business needs. Provide general leadership within RD and business unit organizations. Engage other Medtronic divisions to support development projects and business initiatives as appropriate.

Education: BS in engineering field required. MS in engineering field preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 10 years related experience with at least 5 years of people management experience.

Knowledge: Understanding of the product development process including methods for determining design inputs, evaluating multiple designs, and designing and executing the appropriate verification and validation tests.

Strong people leadership skills and strong collaboration and cross discipline focus required.
